Approximate distance 80 km
The Buffalo River drains Buffalo Lake in the Wood Buffalo National
Park. The river is habitat for moose, caribou, bear, beaver, muskrat
and many different species of water fowl. Pickeral, Pike and Grayling
await you.
You can Flying in from Hay River for around $300.00 (CAD) (Landa
Air 867-874-3500) for 2 people, making this an affordable trip.
Take out is at the bridge on No. 5 highway 55 km west of Hay River
or for those that wish to have an extended trip you can continue
to Great Slave Lake and then follow the shore west back to Hay River.
Water is fast although no serious rapids and portages to deal with.
As this is a National Park no motor boats are allowed. Permits are
required.

From Escarpment Creek to the Town of Hay River, the Hay River offers
scenic flat water or white water paddling.
After the Hay River passes through the Twin Falls Gorge Territorial
Park a canyon between Escartment Creek and the Town of Enterprise
offers some intermediate white water.
From Enterprise to Hay River the water is flat with the occassional
shoal. The River offers an opportunity for paddlers to view eagles,
bears, river beavers and muskrats. This is a great way to pass a
day in the sun.
There are many spots to put in and take out depending on the amount
of time you have for your paddle.

Mackenzie River
The 1,120 (1800 km) mile Mackenzie River (see map) is the longest
river in Canada and forms part of the Finlay-Peace-Mackenzie River,
the tenth longest in the world. Travelled by explorer Alexander
Mackenzie in 1789 and later by fur-traders and missionaries for
hundreds of years. The river passes through the Decho, past the
oldest settlement along the river Fort Simpson on its way to the
Arctic Ocean. Passing through the Sahtu region you will visit the
settlements of Tulita Norman Wells and fort good Hope.
Hay River is the perfect location to start your adventure. Canadian
North Airlines have daily flights into Hay river and Inuvik. or
put your vehicle on the barge and send it to Inuvik. Rent your equipment;
canoe, GPS; gear barrels; marine radio; sat phone and any other
equipment you need and let the current take you to Inuvik. When
you arrive in Inuvik, place the canoe & equipment on the barge
and it will be returned to Hay River, (this we will arrange before
you leave). When you arrive in Inuvik you will lots of time to explore
as you are above the arctic circle you can see the sun for 24 hours.
If you brought your vehicle then enjoy the rest of your adventure
exploring Inuvik, the Dempster highway, and the Yukon.

Kakisa River
Kakisa River offers a fast moving river with lots of wildlife 80km
west of Hay River.
Vale Island Snye
Looking for some quiet paddling without a lot of traveling, out
of the wind, lots of wildlife, close to the Hay River Campground?
Then explore the Vale Island Snye.The Syne is located on Vale Island
and is landlocked it is about 4 km in length and is the home for
many birds and water fowl. This is an excellant place to spend a
few hours paddling.

This is a pretty trip in the spring during high water only.
